Stained shingles will show up from the street and in photographs. You may not even be aware of such stains until your house is being prepared for sale. What are the causes of stains? Algae, lichen and moss are the most common—organisms and fungus that thrive on the northern or western exposed side of a roof, in shaded areas or in the slots between shingles. Dampness will damage and erode the asphalt shingles and encourage wood rot beneath. But the Roof Shampoo process does not utilize heavy scrubbing or products containing bleach that could inflict more damage on the shingles. Such toxic mixes could kill or seriously affect the landscape surroundings.
“We use a biodegradable and non-toxic shampoo and a low pressure water rinse,” Martin said. Other companies either use a product high in TSP or hydrochloride, or else the high pressure power wash system that blast away protective granules from the shingles. In the long run, other processes cause more harm, or else prove ineffective when stains soon return.
